WonderCon 2013: Highlights from ‘Mortal Instruments’,’This is the End,’ and ‘Evil Dead’ [Entertainment Weekly]

“The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
Author Cassandra Clare was joined on stage by a few cast members of the first film adaptation of her extremely popular Mortal Instruments series, including Lily Collins (Clary Fray), Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace Wayland), and Kevin Zegers (Alec Lightwood). Clare said: “It’s extremely surreal to be sitting with Clary and Jace and Alec. They’ve been in my head for such a long time. The most weird thing was to walk on the set and to see everything that I’ve described in the books — the city of bones, the institute, the library, Clary’s house. Everything was real.”

WonderCon 2013: ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ Panel & Posters

“One such film at this year’s con is The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, a fantasy-drama based on the young adult novel by Cassanda Clare.  As part of the Sony Picture presentation on Saturday, WonderCon’s arena hosted a panel presentation promoting The Mortal Instruments, with Clare in attendance alongside stars Lily CollinsJamie Campbell Bower, and Kevin Zegers.”

WonderCon 2013 Sony Panel Highlights: ‘Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’, ‘Evil Dead’, and ‘This is the end’

“The panel included stars Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Kevin Zegers, and the author of the novels, Cassandra Clare. Clare talked about how surreal it was to walk on set and see her words come alive. She’s most excited to see the demons from her book, since they are CGI and not yet completed. She was more involved in the film than she had expected, including talking to the casting director every day at one point.”

Watching Mortal Instruments, Evil Dead And This Is The End Panels At WonderCon

“The cast seemed to have an excellent time on the film and were adamant about wants to portray the characters again in future sequels. Clare also expressed her happiness in being so involved with the production, fully expecting to not even hear from the production until the premiere. She was delighted when she was kept in the loop the whole time and heavily contributed to many decisions in the film, including casting.”

WonderCon: ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Panel’

“Lily Collins, looking rather demure and decked out in black, spoke about the challenges of the character she played, who she ultimately sees as aggressive and fearless, considering the narrative adventure that’s laid ahead for her in the film. Already a fan of the books, the young actress had confidence in knowing that she would bring Clary to life in a satisfactory way that would live up to the fans’ expectations. Bower, who had a supporting role as a Volturi vampire in the Twilightfilms, and played King Arthur in TV’s Camelot, told the audience of the physical demands that the role required and that he would do justice by playing his character cocky and with a sense of arrogance. He was funny and lighthearted throughout. Zegers talked about falling into the role and being exposed to the story without trying to get too far into the book series to know about his character’s fate. He admired the fact that his character was ambiguous and rather mysterious.”

WonderCon: ‘Pacific Rim, ‘Mortal Instruments,’This is The End’ Woo Fans

“That audience was evident at the Q&A session, As opposed to other panels where questioners skew more male, this one was all female, almost all teen, and most of the questions were directed to the author, who sat next to stars Lilly Collins, Jaime Campbell Bower and Kevin Zegers. (One woman even brought her newborn infant, which she named after a character in the book.)”

Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments has become a movie that has EVERYTHING in it

“So we didn’t see any actual scenes from Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, but we did see a new trailer, which was about half stuff from the trailer you already saw. There was all the stuff about Clary Fray (Lily Collins) having a normal life in the city, until she sees a demon killed in front of her in a crowded nightclub — and then she’s plunged into a world of intrigue and demons and monsters and tattoos and crazy shit, basically. Her mother is kidnapped, and she learns that her mother was a Shadowhunter, and so is she.”

WonderCon 2013: Cassandra Clare Promises Guys Will Like Mortal Instruments

“I have a lot of boy readers and they love it because there’s a ton of action,” she said. “There’s a lot of people’s heads getting chopped off, there’s a lot of monsters. It is really gritty and dark. One of the fantastic things about the young-adult category is that it blends millions of different genres.Twilight is romance to me. The Hunger Games is a dystopian science fiction. This is classic urban fantasy. It’s really a different thing.”

WonderCon Anaheim: ‘Mortal Instruments’ Panel

“As for the actors’ favorite characters from the series? Collins adores Magnus for his history and allure. Jamie Bower (Jace) is enamored by the Isabelle’s ruthless nature. “I love my sister,” he said, to roaring laughter and a few raised eyebrows.”
